Diplomatic relations were established on July 2, 1999 by signing the relevant Joint Communiqué in New York.

Visits and meetings:

On July 12-14, 2001, President of the Republic of the Gambia Yahya Jammeh paid a working visit to Ukraine.

In February 2002, during a working visit to Kyiv, the government delegation of the Republic of The Gambia led by B. Jagne, State Secretary (Minister) for Foreign Affairs, signed a contract for the construction of three ferries at the Kyiv shipbuilding and shipyard, reached a principled agreement on the order in Ukraine two dry cargo vessels with a deadweight of 5 thousand tons.

On April 28-May 2, 2004, the delegation of the Republic of The Gambia, led by Secretary of State (Minister for Foreign Affairs) B.Jagne and State Secretary (Minister for Industry, Construction and Infrastructure) B.Garba-Jahumfa, was in charge of the visit to Ukraine.

The Gambian delegation abstained from voting for the draft resolution on the territorial integrity of Ukraine at the UN General Assembly on March 27, 2014

The Gambian delegation abstained from the adoption of the resolution "The Situation of Human Rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol (Ukraine)" in December 2017 (did not participate in December 2016 and December 2018), in December 2019, in December 2020 and in December 2021.

The delegation of The Gambia did not participate for the adoption of resolutions "Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol (Ukraine)" in December 2017 and December 2018, and "The problem of militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine) , as well as areas of the Black and Azov Seas" in December 2018, in December 2019, in December 2020 and in December 2021.
