On October 21-22, 2019, a Human Rights Council Retreat takes place in the capital of Senegal, Dakar.
It is organized by the President of the HRC, Permanent Representative of Senegal to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, H.E. Mr. Coly Seck. It is attended by Permanent Representatives of the HRC Member States, including H.E. Mr. Yuri Klymenko, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, coordinators of UN regional and political groups, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights H.E. Mrs. Michelle Bachelet and representatives of her Office, holders of HRC Special Procedural Mandates, NGOs of human rights focus. The event was opened by Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Senegal and Senegalese Abroad H.E. Mr. Amadou Ba.
The purpose of the event is to discuss in an informal but constructive format the main challenges facing the international community in the field of promotion and protection of human rights, strengthening the role of the UN Human Rights Council and its special procedures, etc. The main topics discussed during the meeting are the impact of environmental issues, in particular climate change, on human rights; mass migration and human rights; human rights in the face of growing inequalities and corporate social responsibility; human rights in the digital age.
